A Quiet Line Between Karayuki and EDYA
EDYA was born from a sense of crossing.
When I moved to the Philippines,
I became deeply aware of women who had crossed oceans long before me —
women whose journeys were rarely spoken of,
yet whose presence felt unmistakably close.
They came to be known as Karayuki.
But what draws EDYA is not the name,
nor the way history has categorized them.
It is the fact that,
within limited choices,
they continued to hold themselves with dignity.
That they did not relinquish their sense of self,
nor the quiet elegance that remained unrecorded.
Their lives are often described only through hardship.
Yet EDYA chooses to look instead at
the continuity of aesthetic sensibility and dignity
that endured within them.
In many ways, their way of living resonates
with how we navigate life today.
Life is never simple or linear.
And still, across unfamiliar lands,
people find ways to live, to work, to connect —
discovering beauty along the way.
Through the making of EDYA garments,
I have met women living their lives far from their place of origin.
Their presence, their resilience,
has taught me about the quiet beauty of living.
EDYA is not a brand that recreates the past.
Nor is it one that romanticizes it.
What we work with are textiles once considered finished —
materials that were set aside, forgotten, left behind.
Rather than returning them to what they once were,
we allow them to rise again
as something that exists beyond their past.
The first collection, REBORN,
was born from encountering the lives of Karayuki,
receiving their way of being,
and passing it through the lens of EDYA.
In this sense,
Karayuki and EDYA are connected
not by history,
but by intention.
A beauty that is not given,
but consciously chosen.
A form of modern nobility
that does not depend on lineage or title.
That is how EDYA understands elegance today.
The EDYA way is not to speak loudly of stories.
It is to trust the weight carried in silence,
and to continue making with the belief
that those who are meant to feel it, will.
からゆきさんとEDYA
EDYAは、「越境」の感覚とともに生まれました。
私がフィリピンに移り住んだとき、
はるか以前に、同じように海を渡った女性たちの存在を
強く意識するようになりました。
彼女たちは「からゆきさん」と呼ばれてきました。
けれどEDYAが惹かれるのは、
その呼び名や歴史的な分類ではありません。
限られた選択肢の中で生きながら、
なお、自らを保ち続けたこと。
語られることのなかった気高さを、
沈黙の中で失わなかったこと。
彼女たちの人生は、
しばしば困難さだけで語られます。
しかしEDYAは、そこに宿っていた
美意識と尊厳が、途切れることなく続いていた事実に
目を向けています。
からゆきさんの生き様は、
現代を生きる私たちの姿とも、静かに重なります。
人生は決して一筋縄ではいかない。
それでも人は、異国の地で出会い、働き、生きる中で、
それぞれのかたちで美しさを見出していく。
EDYAの服づくりを通して出会ってきた、
国や文化を越えて生きる女性たちの姿が、
私に人生の美しさを教えてくれました。
EDYAは、過去を再現するブランドではありません。
そして、過去を美化することもしません。
私たちが手にするのは、
一度役目を終えたとされた布たち。
忘れられ、置き去りにされた素材です。
それらを、元の姿に戻すのではなく、
過去を超えた存在として、
もう一度、静かに立ち上がらせる。
からゆきさんの存在を知り、
その生き方を受け取り、
EDYAというフィルターを通して生まれたのが、
最初のコレクション「REBORN」でした。
その姿勢は、
からゆきさんとEDYAを
歴史ではなく、意志でつないでいます。
与えられたものではなく、
自ら選び取った美しさ。
それは、血筋や肩書きによらない
現代の「貴さ」だと、EDYAは考えています。

物語を声高に語らないこと。

感じ取る人にだけ、そっと届くように
ものづくりを続けることです。
